Legendary pianist and pedagogue Peter Frankl coaching a group of UGA students at CMA 2019.

GENERAL INFORMATION

UGA music students are able to actively participate in the festival by registering directly with the festival via this website as well as UGA Marketplace if a tuition fee is due (see explanation below). The curriculum will be directed by Dr. Michael Heald (strings) and Dr. Liza Stepanova (all other instruments and voice).

Preformed chamber music groups are encouraged to apply. Groups must have selected their repertoire and rehearsed prior to the beginning of the festival. In the application, please provide a name of a UGA faculty member who has either coached your group or is ready to vouch for your preparedness before any coachings or masterclasses with distinguished guest artists.

Please apply using the online application form below by Monday, March 25. Please contact the professors at the links above with any questions. External candidates must receive approval from Profs. Heald or Stepanova. Please email these professors with your interest in this program.

TUITION AND GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS

Tuition for the festival is $300 which includes a masterclass performance, three coachings, participation in final concerts on May 20, and complimentary tickets to most festival performances. Tuition can be paid via UGA Marketplace (link forthcoming).

Graduate students registering via the form below can apply for a tuition waiver in exchange for an internship helping the festival with logistical tasks. Graduate students who are unable to commit to this work will be responsible for a festival tuition fee of $300. Undergraduate students who are experiencing financial hardship may contact Profs. Heald and Stepanova in writing to request an internship. Please attach a resume and a brief explanation of your situation.

SCHEDULE AND CONFLICTS

The festival schedule is busy, and it is expected that all student participants, especially graduate interns, would be flexible and available for the duration of the festival to attend masterclasses, coachings, concerts, and other events. Most string players will be performing with the international bandoneon soloist JP Jofre in the opening concert on May 12 as part of the CMA Chamber Orchestra and should plan to be available for this concert and at least two rehearsals. Student final concerts are on May 20, and one or two groups selected by the guest artists will perform in the CMA Gala on May 21. Select student participants will also perform alongside guest artists on almost every other festival performance with the exception of “The Art of the String Quartet.”

Please indicate unavoidable scheduling conflicts, such as Maymester classes or a conflicting concert in the form below. Any conflicts that may arise at a later date should be immediately communicated in writing to both Profs. Heald and Stepanova. Thank you for helping us make the festival run smoothly for everyone!
